Walking the Passage

Solo Exhibition
04 Sept - 04 Oct 1999
St Albans Gallery
St Albans, NSW
"How concrete is the world of the spirit when a mere door can give images of hesitation, temptation, seduction, security and warmth." Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

The inspiration for this exhibition was an isolated farmhouse in the St. Albans area. Lifelong residents Ettie and Eileen Dean were about to move from the farm which had been home to their family for over 100 years - the first of a cluster of slab and wattle & daub buildings having originally been constructed by their grandfather. Gallery Curator Suzie Startin says that she always loved to pause and take in the ambiance of the whole place - the jam stall, colourful flowers, and most of all, the two sisters sitting in their cane chairs on the verandah, taking in their surroundings and the travelers passing by.

Victoria had painted interiors of old and sometimes deserted houses for many years, being fascinated by the passage of lives expressed in them. "Initially I was interested in the many passageways at Dean's Farm, connecting interior with exterior, the past with the present."
